Electromagnetic Flow Meters
Electromagnetic flow meters (magnetmeters) measure the voltage induced by a conductive liquid moving through a magnetic field.
Working principle
- Coils create a magnetic field across the pipe bore.
- A conductive liquid cutting the field induces a voltage (Faraday's law).
- Electrodes pick up the voltage; it is proportional to average flow velocity.
- Volume flow = velocity × cross-sectional pipe area.
Selection data
| Parameter | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum conductivity | ≥ 5 µS/cm (some to 1 µS/cm) | Required for signal |
| Measured media | Water, wastewater, chemicals, slurry | No obstruction in bore |
| Accuracy | ±0.5 % of rate | Velocity-profile dependent |
| Pipe size | DN10–DN3000 | Full-bore designs |
| Output | 4–20 mA, pulse, HART, Modbus | Standard industrial I/O |
When to choose electromagnetic
Conductive liquids with solids or fibers, large water and wastewater lines, and any duty where an unobstructed bore and no pressure drop matter.
